The Global Battery Alliance (GBA) has launched the Beta Release of the Battery Benchmarks, developed in close cooperation with voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) active along the battery value chain. The Benchmarks are a key milestone in advancing the GBA’s Battery Passport framework — a globally recognised system designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and sustainability performance across the battery industry.

The Battery Passport recognises facilities’ sustainability claims assured against existing standards, incentivises companies to undergo independent assurance via a scoring approach, and benchmarks standards coverage against a common set of ESG expectations and credibility criteria. These mechanisms aim to harmonise sustainability efforts and support the GBA’s goal of launching a full certification scheme for sustainable batteries by 2027.

ASI’s contribution and collaboration

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is pleased to contribute to the GBA Battery Passport framework through participation in the GBA Standard Setter Working Group and inclusion of the ASI Performance Standard in the benchmarking process. This collaboration aligns with ASI’s ongoing efforts to harmonise with relevant external standards and schemes — helping reduce unnecessary duplication, inform continual improvement, and promote credible sustainability assurance across materials and sectors.

“Collaboration with global initiatives like the GBA ensures that the sustainability performance of aluminium — a key material for the battery sector — is recognised within broader frameworks driving responsible production and use,” said ASI’s Director of Partnerships, Marieke van der Mijn. “We look forward to continuing to work with the GBA as our respective standards evolve.”

Next steps and public consultation

The Beta Release aims to support early adoption of the Battery Passport, test its functionality through Operational Trials led by GBA members, and gather broad-based feedback via a public consultation scheduled for October–November 2025. The insights gained will inform updates to the Benchmarks ahead of the 2027 launch of the GBA’s certification scheme for sustainable batteries.

ASI will review the recognition between the ASI Performance Standard and GBA Benchmarks ahead of the final launch of the GBA certification scheme in 2027 to ensure that the mapping is accurate and aligned with the most recent version of the ASI Standards.

For voluntary sustainability standard-setting organisations, the Battery Passport offers a valuable recognition system that connects their frameworks to companies’ sustainability scores, enhances visibility, and supports continuous improvement through coverage gap analysis.
