China and Indonesia are both pivotal players in the global aluminium value chain—China as the world’s largest producer and consumer, and Indonesia as a key destination for aluminium-related investment and processing capacity. ASI has prioritised engagement in both countries to strengthen implementation of responsible practices, and recent activities underscore growing momentum. A recent series of in-person engagements across the region highlights this progress.
In Indonesia, ASI held a full-day workshop in Jakarta on 2 June following a site visit to Bintan Alumina, which recently joined as an ASI Member. This case exemplifies a successful China-initiated membership journey. The process involved significant preparatory work including early-stage queries in 2023 to on-site orientation and assurance capacity-building in 2024, and ultimately, membership onboarding in 2025. With Chinese aluminium production capacity increasingly extending into Southeast Asia, the Bintan Alumina membership onboarding experience offers a valuable reference point for future engagement in the region.
In China, ASI conducted its first face-to-face technical calibration with assurance providers, contributing to stronger benchmarking and enhanced risk oversight. With nearly 40% of audit reports from China appearing on the Oversight list, these sessions are helping to align expectations, improve audit quality, and reinforce confidence in ASI’s assurance processes.
Complementary training efforts also advanced. Internal auditor training was delivered to multiple assurance firms, with additional sessions held in Shanghai for TÜV Rheinland and TÜV SÜD. These activities support ASI’s ongoing work to ensure technical rigour in sustainability-related topics such as greenhouse gas emissions and life cycle assessment.
Due diligence and membership outreach efforts continue to progress. A recent on-site assessment confirmed the readiness of XMXYG Aluminium—a restructured and now state-owned enterprise formerly known as Zhongwang Aluminium—to meet ASI’s expectations for responsible performance. The company has since joined ASI, representing a significant addition to the membership base in China.
Finally, ASI’s global ESG leadership was featured prominently in a presentation given at the Suzhou Aluminium Summit. Accredited audit firms also used the opportunity to showcase their ASI-related services, further illustrating the growing recognition of ASI across the sector.
Together, these initiatives demonstrate how ASI is expanding its presence and partnerships in two strategically important countries for the aluminium sector—laying the foundation for deeper impact and broader adoption of responsible practices.
What’s Next
ASI will continue strengthening its presence in the region with upcoming engagements such as Aluminium China 2025 on 9 July in Shanghai. ASI CEO Dr Fiona Solomon will join a high-level panel discussion exploring global aluminium trends, including the impact of trade policies, shifting consumption patterns, and the growing influence of the new energy sector. She will also share insights on responsible sourcing, the value of ASI certification in market access, and strategies for passing environmental and low-carbon value through the aluminium supply chain.
