ASI led a successful Aluminium Supply Chain GHG Accounting and Pathway Workshop in Shanghai on 5th July, hosted by SGS and attended by over 200 participants from ASI Entities and Auditors.

In addition to presentations from the ASI team on the Initiative’s recently published 1.5 Degree Entity Level Pathways Method, the treatment of recycling in emissions reduction and on ASI Assurance Assessment issues, the Chinese language event featured emissions accounting and reporting guidance from ASI Member RMI, collaborators IAI and Sunlight Consulting and accredited audit firm SGS.

A panel discussion of downstream users, comprising representatives from Budweiser, Decathlon, and the automotive companies Nio and Polestar focused on their emissions reduction challenges, including the high-value use (instead of downgraded use) of secondary aluminium, transparency, traceability, and GHG data reporting requirements in Europe (CSRD regulation), as well as the alignment of various reporting methodologies.

Beyond these users, the general trend in the Chinese industry is for stricter requirements and regulations for reporting GHG data, leading to increased inquiries about data traceability and disclosures.

As well as the workshop, ASI staff also participated in the Automotive Low-Carbon Action Plan Development Forum held by the China Automotive Technology Research Center (CATARC) in Beijing. They introduced a program called C-GCAP (China Green Car Assessment Programme), which evaluates the green performance of automobiles in three aspects: health, energy efficiency, and low carbon.

ASI was also represented among the speakers at the 2nd ALU Insight-International Aluminium Industry Development Forum held at Shanghai’s Aluminium China 2024, Asia’s leading trade show and B2B platform for the aluminium industry and its main application sectors.
