S.A. Damm has successfully achieved dual ASI certification – to the ASI Performance Standard – Material Stewardship Certifications and Chain of Custody (CoC) Standard for its beer breweries – Estrella de Levante Fábrica de Cerveza S.A. and Compañia Cervecera Damm, S.L . – with a focus on aluminium can beverage packaging. The company is the first beverage producer worldwide to achieve ASI Certification.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that S.A. Damm’s breweries in Barcelona and Murcia have been successfully certified against ASI’s Performance Standard for responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium with a focus on material stewardship. The certification covers packaging and storage of beer in cans, as well as related activities including design; packaging and storage finished products; waste management and storage; and the recovery of waste, including packaging waste of the product consumed by the end consumer. The company also achieved ASI CoC Standard Certification for the two facilities, as well as the company headquarters in Barcelona.

The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. ASI Performance Standard certifications focusing on ‘material stewardship’ address issues such as product design, life cycle assessments, management of process scrap and collection and recycling of products at end-of-life. The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities.

The independent, third-party audits of the S.A. Damm facilities were carried out by TÜV Rheinland Cert GmbH.

Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “We sincerely congratulate S.A. Damm on becoming the first beverage company to achieve dual ASI Certification for their two beer brewing facilities and the company headquarters in Spain. The Material Stewardship certification provides assurance that the company is addressing the impacts of their aluminium use via can design, scrap recovery in their plants, and support for systems to recover the cans, post-consumer. The company’s canstock sourcing arrangement with Ball, another ASI Member with dual ASI Certification, means that we can hope to see the ASI on-product label on Damm’s brewery products in the near future.”

Jorge Villavecchia, Damm’s general manager said, “Damm’s commitment to responsible sourcing is at the heart of our ambition to minimise our impact on society and the environment by delivering top-quality products and services. The Damm value chain has a material impact on our sustainability performance and by joining ASI and with the Certification according Performance Standard and CoC, we will enhance the sustainability credentials of our aluminium beverage cans, ensuring high social, environmental and governance standards. We consider this to be a major milestone that keeps us moving forward on our industry-leading sustainability journey.”
