With the addition of the Al Taweelah alumina refinery to the company’s certification scope, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has certified their entire global operations to the ASI Performance Standard V2 (2017). The company’s certified operations now comprise a bauxite mining operation in Guinea, and an alumina refinery, two smelters, and several associated facilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative has expanded EGA’s Performance Standard V2 (2017) certification scope, adding the company’s Al Taweelah alumina refinery. EGA’s existing separate certifications for its Al Taweelah and Jebel Ali smelter and casting operations, and its new certification for Al Taweelah alumina refinery, have now been consolidated into a single certification for all EGA operations in the UAE. The updated certification audit scope also includes a related bauxite residue storage area and EGA head office in Abu Dhabi, alongside carbon plants, power generation, utilities and associated facilities at Al Taweelah and Jebel Ali. In addition, in early 2023, EGA’s wholly owned subsidiary, Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC), achieved Performance Standard V2 Certification for its bauxite mining and related rail and port operations, with the result that all of EGA’s global operations are now ASI Performance Standard certified.

In 2022, EGA produced 14m wet metric tonnes bauxite, 2.43m tonnes of alumina, 2.65m tonnes of hot metal, and 2.72m tonnes of cast metal.

Fiona Solomon, CEO of ASI said, “We warmly congratulate EGA on having achieved Performance Standard Certification V2 at all of its global operations. In 2019, EGA became the first company in the Middle East to achieve ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Al Taweelah smelter (UAE). More recently, EGA’s subsidiary GAC led the way to achieving the first certification of bauxite mining in Africa for their operations in Guinea, a country with globally important bauxite reserves and also one where the industry’s commitment to sustainability is tested. EGA’s pursuit of certifying all its global operations underscores the relevance and applicability of the ASI Performance Standard in diverse operational landscapes and reinforces the Standard’s role in fostering responsible practices throughout the entire aluminium value chain.”

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Global Aluminium, said, “Aluminium has an essential role to play in the development of a more sustainable society, and it also matters how sustainably aluminium is made. Certification to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s Performance Standard is a transparent and independent verification of our commitment to sustainability, and I am proud all EGA’s operational assets are now certified. Our next goal is to start producing ASI-certified metal during next year, and to produce only ASI-certified metal by 2030.”
