We’re pleased to announce the launch of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) course, now available on educationAL, ASI’s online learning platform. This course provides an understanding of LCA practice, its application across the aluminium value chain, and guidance on the requirements of Criterion 4.1 of the ASI Performance Standard.

Why LCA matters

As sustainability becomes central to the aluminium industry, understanding a product’s environmental impacts across the value chain is essential. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) – as a key tool in the life cycle approach – not only measures impacts from raw material extraction to end-of-life, but also supports informed decision-making at every stage. By applying LCA, organisations can make better choices around materials, manufacturing, and design.

Whether the goal is reducing emissions, improving resource efficiency, or strengthening stakeholder trust – LCA offers a foundation for credible, measurable sustainability action in alignment with global frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ISO 14040/14044.

How this course helps

Understanding LCA strengthens your ability to make responsible, informed decisions when shaping strategy, overseeing production, managing data, or engaging with stakeholders.
The course is structured into three focused modules that build this understanding step by step – from foundational concepts to practical application:

    • Module 1: Life Cycle Thinking
Introduces the life cycle perspective and its relevance to product and systems thinking in the aluminium industry.
    • Module 2: LCA Fundamentals
Explores the four phases of an ISO-compliant LCA – goal and scope, inventory analysis, impact assessment, and interpretation – along with key design parameters that can influence the results.
    • Module 3: ASI’s LCA Requirements
Covers how Criterion 4.1 of the ASI Performance Standard (V3) is applied in practice, including audit expectations, common non-conformances, and examples of better and best practices demonstrated by ASI Members.

Who is it for?

The course is ideal for those new to LCA as well as practitioners seeking to align with ASI expectations. It’s suitable for a wide range of roles across ASI Member organisations – from executives and sustainability teams to operations, procurement, and communications staff. Access is free for all ASI Members via educationAL.
