Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) today announced that the Novelis Korea Limited facility at Yeongju, Korea has achieved Chain of Custody Standard Certification. With an annual capacity of 340,000 tons, the Yeongju recycling facility recycles more than 18 billion used beverage cans each year and is the largest facility of its kind in Asia.
The ASI Certification program was developed through an extensive multi-stakeholder consultation process and is the only comprehensive voluntary sustainability standard initiative for the aluminium value chain. The ASI CoC Standard sets out requirements for the creation of a Chain of Custody for material that is produced and processed through the value chain into diverse downstream sectors. The implementation of ASI’s CoC Standard links verified practices at successive steps of the supply chain – certified under the ASI Performance Standard – to the products produced by ASI Certified Entities. The CoC Standard also confirms that appropriate policies and due diligence process are in place to identify and address critical issues, such as corruption, human rights abuses, materials originating from conflict-affected and high-risk areas in the supply chain and support responsible sourcing.
The independent, third-party audit of the Novelis Korea Limited Yeongju plant was carried out by DNV Business Assurance Services UK Ltd.
Fiona Solomon, Chief Executive Officer at ASI said “We warmly congratulate Novelis on achieving Chain of Custody Standard Certification for its Yeongju plant. With the significant volume of aluminium scrap processing, the recycled feedstock for its coil and sheet products, and dual ASI Certification, this facility is an important node in the circular economy, providing its customers the ability to source responsibly produced aluminium for their downstream products.”
“By achieving the dual certification, our Yeongju plant has now been independently certified to comply to ASI standards, demonstrating that the sustainable aluminum solutions we provide to our customers are responsibly sourced and produced,” said Sachin Satpute, President Novelis Asia. “These certifications clearly establish Novelis as a supplier of choice and a partner to improve sustainability.”
