On June 11-13, ASI participated in the ASEAN Critical Minerals Conference, held in Jakarta, Indonesia where Cameron Jones, ASI Director of Assurance represented ASI both as a panelist and keynote speaker on the importance of producing and sourcing responsible aluminium, and how ‘whole of supply chain’ certification schemes such as ASI can support this. Over 500 delegates attended from several commodity and service sectors operating within the SE Asian region. Cameron was joined by ASI representatives Mr. Chunming Dong and Michael Guo where they actively engaged with major players across the SE Asian critical minerals sectors (including aluminium), noting the rising interest in responsible aluminum in the region and in the activities and benefits of ASI Membership and its certification program.

The conference highlighted the significant increase in both local and foreign investment into critical minerals extraction and processing (including Aluminium) in the SE Asian region and particularly in Indonesia. Much of this investment is coming from Chinese firms presently, however other countries are looking to become involved.  Challenges discussed throughout the conference also included the recent issues around nickel mining and processing in Indonesia, and what lessons can be learned so as to proactively improve ESG performance across other sectors in Indonesia. How can producers achieve appropriate ESG performance without significantly impacting costs? The issue relating to the disclosure and sharing of non-financial information was reiterated throughout the conference and additionally how can developing countries maintain momentum in ESG performance, as more developed economies continue to ‘raise the bar’ on performance and expectations.

Following the conference, Cameron, Michael and Mr. Dong visited the recently commissioned Bintan Alumina Refinery, on Bintan Island, northern Indonesia owned and operated by ASI Member Shandong Nanshan Aluminium Co., Ltd. where they met with senior management who have recently committed to achieving Certification to the ASI Performance Standard in the near future.
