ASI Standards Committee

The ASI Standards Committee was convened in 2016 to develop the ASI Assurance model and Chain of Custody Standard, and prepare for the launch of the ASI Certification program as an operating system. It replaces the Standard Setting Group, established in 2014.

The Committee meets regularly and minutes of the meetings are available below.

Committee Composition

The Committee currently comprises 21 individuals, elected by all ASI members from the Production and Transformation, Industrial Users and Civil Society membership classes, and 2 nominated representatives from the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum.  ASI greatly values the time and expertise of each Committee member in contributing to ASI’s ongoing development.

WWF – Senior Advisor Sustainable Business 

Bernhard is the Senior Advisor for Sustainable Business at WWF Germany, based in Frankfurt, having worked in business and industry relations at WWF since 2001. He established the Forest and Trade Network in Germany and has been active in negotiation of a wide range of environmental and conservation issues with companies.  He has a Diploma in Biology and a Doctorate in Agriculture (Soil Science).

IUCN – Deputy Director, Business and Biodiversity Programme

Giulia’s current / recent responsibilities include the management of the Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel, the development of the recommendations for responsible business operations in and around KBAs, and the development of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative’s performance standard.

Previously, Giulia worked for the United Nations Environment Programme, where she was the coordinator of UNEP’s tourism work.

Giulia has a master of science degree from the London School of Economics in marine policy (1993), a master’s in environmental engineering from the Turin Polytechnic (1991), a bachelor of arts in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA (1990) and the Laurea in geography from the Università di Genova, Italy (1997).

Chimbo Foundation – Executive President 

I am a biochemist/biologist, have a PhD in aquatic ecology and have in my scientific career also several taxonomic publications on my name; have been a civil servant for two Dutch Ministries; worked as a consultant in the field of landscape planning and international environment (a.o. coal transport) for DHV Consultants; worked in South Africa with Stewart Scott Consultants; I have had a political career (a.o. vice president of the Dutch labour party, member of the provincial parliament of North Holland and member of the European Parliament); I have been the managing director renewables and executive vice president sustainability at Nuon NV; and one of the directors of the State Forestry Service of the Netherlands.

I have served on advisory committees (environment; development aid; sustainability; CO2 trading) of the Dutch Government.

I have been president of several NGO’s (FOEI Netherlands, Stichting AAP etc.); member of the works council of DHV consultants; and member of the Council of the University of Wageningen.

At the moment I am executive president of Chimbo Foundation; president of the executive board of Daridibó (Guinea Bissau); and executive president of FRES (Foundation Rural Energy Services).

I am a member of IUCN-CEM.

Verité, Program Director

Philip Hunter provides guidance on all projects related to issues of forced labor and human trafficking, serving as a bridge between research, training, consulting, and supplier programs on the issues. Philip was lead author of Verité’s Fair Hiring Framework for Responsible Business and conceived and wrote many of the tools developed for Verité’s open-source Fair Hiring Toolkit. Before joining Verité, Philip worked with the International Labor Organisation and as consultant to the United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT). At the ILO, Philip worked as Research and Projects Officer in the Special Action Program to Combat Forced Labour, and spent several years working with the Multinational Enterprises Program. Philip is the author of ILO and UN.GIFT handbooks for business on forced labor and human trafficking, and the eLearning course for business published jointly by UN.GIFT and the End Human Trafficking Now! Campaign. Philip holds a master’s degree in Political Science from Toronto’s York University. He has lived, worked and traveled across Europe and the Caucasus, parts of the Middle East and Asia, and currently lives in Toronto, Canada. Philip speaks English and German.

Fauna & Flora International – Senior Advisor

Thomas has degrees in environmental and human sciences (BSc., Ph.D.) and business (MBA) and has worked on the interface between business and the environment for 15 years.

He has worked variously for the Zoological Society of London, the World Bank, the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and for WWF and spent most of the last decade based in South East Asia. He joined FFI in 2015 and works across the mining and energy, agriculture and conservation finance teams.

His interests include the natural capital approach to environmental management, the development of industry standards for sustainability and the development of green economies.

Transparency International – Swiss Chapter President

Jean-Pierre Méan is of counsel at MCE Legal, a law firm with offices in Lausanne and other locations in Switzerland. Previously, he was Chief Legal Officer of the Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd., the main operating company of the Alcan Group (now Rio Tinto Alcan); General Counsel of Landis & Gyr, a Swiss-based manufacturer of electricity meters and building controls (now part of the Siemens Group); General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer of SGS, the leading inspection, verification and testing company based in Switzerland; and Chief Compliance Officer of the European Bank for Development and Reconstruction in London.

Jean-Pierre is president of the Swiss chapter of Transparency International and chaired a task force that reissued the Rules on Combating Corruption of the International Chamber of Commerce in 2011. He has a law degree and is admitted to the bar in Switzerland and Quebec, Canada.

Keep America Beautiful, Senior Vice President Recycling

Brenda Pulley joined Keep America Beautiful in October 2010 to enhance their national efforts to increase recycling participation. In her role to grow the reach and impact of Keep America Beautiful’s recycling initiatives, she is responsible for overall strategic planning, program design and implementation, stakeholder outreach, and national advocacy for the nonprofit. Brenda also serves on the Board of Directors of R2 Solutions – the organization charged with promoting environmentally responsible practices throughout the electronics recycling industry. Prior to joining Keep America Beautiful, Brenda served as the Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications for Novelis, a global aluminum rolling and recycling company. Brenda has worked on various environmental issues both in the public and private sectors, starting her career working for the U.S. House of Representatives, Energy and Environment Small Business Committee.

Institute for Human Rights and Business (IHRB), Project Manager Migrant Workers and Work With Dignity

Neill manages all aspects of the IHRB Migrant Workers programme and helped oversee the development of the Dhaka Principles for Migration With Dignity – a set of human rights based principles that offer a clear framework for understanding the recruitment and employment of migrant workers worldwide. The current focus for the programme is ethical recruitment and in particular the payment of recruitment fees by migrant workers. IHRB are working with others to promote increased due diligence by business and establish the principle of “employer pays” (the cost of recruitment) as the norm across all industry sectors and locations.

Neill previously worked as part of the Campaigns Team at The Body Shop International where he was involved with a number of environmental and human rights campaigns.

Karl Barth is responsible Purchasing of Non-Ferrous and Precious Metals. His team´s responsibility includes the international purchasing of aluminium for BMW Group.

Nespresso – Sustainability Project Manager 

Christophe Boussemart is currently working on the development of the 2014-2020 Nespresso sustainability program, which focuses on agroforestry in coffee farms and regions, capsule recycling rates, responsible sourcing of raw materials and end-of-life management for coffee machines (under the Circular Economy program).

Christophe has worked on coffee systems at Nespresso for 12 years. He began by inventing and developing coffee and milk systems (machines, capsules, packaging) in the R&D department. With a strong interest in improving the environmental performance of the company, he then started to work on different projects, particularly related to coffee machine energy reduction solutions and used capsules collection and recycling programs in countries where Nespresso capsules are sold.

In 2008, he became responsible for Nespresso’s environmental performance monitoring and improvement efforts, focusing on used capsules collection and recycling capacity, coffee machine energy consumption reduction and carbon footprint reduction.

Stefan Rohrmus graduated in Industrial Engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 1996.

Participant in the International Traineeship of Daimler (Automotive Industry). Various positions as Quality Manager within Daimler in fabrication plants and the Headquarter.

In Schüco International KG for 10 years, first as Quality Manager for Management Systems, since 2010 as Head of Quality Planning & Supplier Management.

Fluently in English, Spanish and French. Work experience abroad in Argentina and Spain.

Intercultural Competence. Strong interested in sustainability strategies.

Schüco International is a building envelope specialist and one of the market leaders for window, façade and door systems. The amount of energy required by buildings is essentially determined by the building envelope. Façade products will play a key role in future energy-neutral buildings.

Arconic – Global Director of Environment, Health and Safety

Marcel van der Velden was named Global Director EHS in January 2017. In this capacity Marcel oversees Internal Audit, Sustainability, Health and EHS Management systems. Marcel joined Arconic in 2002 after a career in several Health and Safety positions within industrial sectors in the Netherlands.

Within Arconic Marcel assumed increasing responsibilities in Internal audit and EHS and was promoted to the Global EHS Audit director role in 2011. Between 2012-2015 Marcel relocated to the corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh PA, USA.

In preparation for the separation of Alcoa Inc, Marcel obtained responsibility for corporate EHS matters in Europe including REACH. Marcel is based out of the Netherlands office.

Constellium – Marketing Director, Packaging and Automotive Rolled Products unit 

Catherine Athènes joined Constellium in October 2011. After leading the creation of the company’s sustainability council and spearheading production of its first sustainability report, she was nominated as leader of the Sustainability Council of Constellium in October 2012.

Catherine has 20 years of international experience in corporate strategy, marketing, sales and sustainability. She began her career as a strategy consultant, and then spent nine years working at Pechiney, a major French aluminium and packaging company that was subsequently bought by Alcan. As the marketing director of a packaging subsidiary, she led new product development targeting the cosmetics industry. She then moved to speciality papers with Arjowiggins, heading the sales and marketing team of that company’s medical division, with a particular focus on the fast development in Asia. After a one-year sabbatical in the USA, during which she was active in non-profit projects, Catherine joined Constellium.

Catherine is graduate of the French Business School, HEC Paris.

Rio Tinto – General Manager, Marketing and Development, Metal 

Originally from Grenoble-France, Roland joined Rio Tinto in 2002 as Procurement and Logistics plant manager in Cameroon, Africa.  During his career with Rio Tinto, he held different positions which brought him to Brazil, Europe, North America and Singapore. Since 2013, he has been in Montreal in his current role.

Experience in Chemical and Metal industries.

Roland has also been representing ASI in conferences in North America and China

With a strong multicultural background, Roland speaks 5 Languages and has been living in over 9 countries on all continents.

Rio Tinto are:

Ball Corporation – Director, Sustainability

Ball Corporation is one of the world’s leading suppliers of innovative, sustainable packaging solutions for beverage, food and household products customers. Björn is responsible for developing, managing and promoting Ball’s global corporate sustainability efforts. Since 2008, he has worked with various stakeholder groups on areas of mutual interest, broadening Ball’s perspective on sustainability topics beyond its own operations.

Two of Björn’s major focus areas are driving sustainability throughout the metal packaging value chain and working toward increased metal packaging recycling rates in major markets.

Prior to his career at Ball, Björn worked as a consultant and crafted the sustainability strategies and reports for various multinational companies from different industry sectors.

Björn has a diploma in corporate sustainability management from the University of Lüneburg, Germany.

UC Rusal – Marketing Director, Sustainability

Jerome has 22 years of international business experience –15 years in the Aluminium industry, (including 7 years in downstream and 8 years in upstream), in various roles of product management, R&D management, sales, marketing, supply-chain management, and market strategy. Jerome worked for Pechiney/ Alcan/ Rio Tinto until 2015. Jerome took a frontline proactive role in the early development and promotion of ASI. Jerome joined Rusal in February 2016.

Rosa is holder of a master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from University of Vigo (Spain), a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Escuela de Organización Industrial of Madrid (Spain), an Executive MBA of the Haute École de Comerce (University of Geneva) and she is finalizing her master´s degree in Commodity Trading at the Geneva Business School (University of Geneva). Rosa is involved in diversity and inclusion activities inside and outside of Alcoa (Alcoa Women Network leader for Europe and Board Member of Career Woman Forum in Geneva) and Ethics and Compliance practice (Integrity Champion for Government Affairs Organization)

Hydro – Manager, LCA & Sustainability

Jostein Søreide is responsible for Aluminium Stewardship in Hydro, and works in Hydro’s Climate Office which is responsible for Hydro’s climate strategy and carbon accounting. He holds a MSc in environmental technology and chemistry and has 20 years of experience working in Hydro on environmental and sustainability related topics. A big part of his responsibility has been work in international, external settings, and he was responsible for establishing the Sustainability Committee in European Aluminium, for which he was the Chairman from 2010 to 2014. Søreide has also been working actively with Social Responsible Investors for 15 years. He has been Hydro’s representative in the SSG of ASI, and was also participating in the predecessor of ASI, Responsible Aluminium. During the standard setting phase of ASI, Jostein was elected the industry co-chair of the SSG.

Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact, Institutional Support Service Section Head 

Ms. Robeliza Halip belongs to the Kalanguya tribe of Ifugao and the Kankanaey tribe of Mt. Province in the Cordillera Region, Philippines. Prior to joining AIPP, she has been actively involved in human rights work in the Cordillera Region and has likewise been involved in the government working as the information officer of the provincial government of Ifugao and consequently the consultant on Indigenous Peoples Affairs of the Chairman of the National Cultural Communities Committee in the 15thCongress. Her educational background is in biology.

Indigenous Village Leaders (VIDS) in Suriname

Marie-Josée is a representative of the Association of Indigenous Village Leaders (VIDS) in Suriname.  She has also worked as a lecturer in cultural anthropology, and a project co-ordinator at Skanfonds, a Dutch Fund which provides opportunity to people in vulnerable positions to participate in society, so that their quality of life improves.
